Few things are sadder in this life than seeing Tom Hanks cry. ![]() No film on this list better depicts the devastating psychological effect of a hostage situation on its victim, and Tom Hanks gave the performance of his career in the film’s final five minutes, when the adrenaline runs out and he’s safe to finally feel the fear. Richard Phillips, lived to write a book about his ordeal - Greengrass still delivers a harrowing nail-biter. ![]() Even though we know how this story ends - it’s based on a real-life 2009 hostage situation in which Somali pirates hijacked a U.S. “Captain Phillips” (2013, rated PG-13)ĭirector Paul Greengrass knows his way around a thriller. The tonal shift between films is dramatic but, thanks to a greatly entertaining final product, wholly justified. So it should have been concerning when Cameron took the reins from Scott to direct a sequel to "Alien." Fortunately, he didn't try to replicate the first film's accomplishments, playing instead to his own strengths and turning Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) into a bona fide action hero as she returns to the alien planet with space marines, where she finds a shell-shocked little girl named Newt. The former, in his prime, was a master of haunted atmospherics the latter likes to blow things up. Ridley Scott and James Cameron are very different sorts of directors. There are killer rigs, explosions galore and a guitar that shoots flames, but its beating heart is with the safety of those five girls. Another thing nobody expected was the decidedly feminist slant the story takes: Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), right-hand woman to the man in charge, absconds with his prisoner brides to free them of their brood-mare fates. Who’d have thought that director George Miller would release his best Mad Max film in 2015, at the age of 70? Precisely no one, which is partly why his return to staging action films in post-apocalyptic wastelands was such a thrill. He’s got years to pass before they can swing back to stage their daring rescue (heart-stopping in its dangerously complexity), which he does by growing potatoes, keeping a web-cam diary and dissing disco. The actor carried nearly the whole of Ridley Scott’s adaptation of “The Martian” on his back as Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on the red planet after his crew mistakes him for dead. 'The Martian' (2015, rated PG-13)įorget fossil fuels – we should attempt to power the world on Matt Damon’s charisma. That's nothing any of us would have predicted in the mid-aughts after having suffered through "Jersey Girl" and "Gigli." But Affleck gained some traction as a director of mature dramas, finding critical and box-office success with "Gone Baby Gone" and "The Town" before hitting it out of the park with "Argo," a political thriller than dramatizes the incredible rescue of six American embassy staff members from Iran during the 1979 Iranian Revolution using a phony film production. 'Argo' (2012, rated R)īen Affleck: Director of an Academy Award-winning film. The astronauts face peril every step of the way back to Earth, and Howard’s slavish devotion to realism and accurate reproduction makes their isolation and impending doom feel all the more real. Ron Howard made the directorial leap from lovable goofball (“Cocoon,” “Splash,” “Willow”) to serious Oscar contender with his dramatization of the ill-fated 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission, where an explosion on board transformed a moon landing into a rescue mission. The moral of this nihilistic sci-fi? Look out for yourself nobody else will. Enter Snake Plissken, an eye patch-sporting beefcake and former U.S Special Forces soldier who’s coerced with the promise of freedom to rescue the President of the United States after Air Force One is downed over Manhattan. Trying to break out is certain suicide trying to break in, madness. ![]() In a scenario that probably seemed a lot more realistic in the early ’80s, director John Carpenter imagines a future where Manhattan is closed off and converted into a maximum-security prison. From astronauts to soldiers to the President of the United States, these imperiled characters get a major assist from saviors big and small. What’s more dramatic than a rescue mission? Not much, which is why we make so many movies about them.
